The river's bend
The Arkansas River sweeps in a wide arc south of town, the single curving line in a landscape of straight roads, and the reason the place carries its name.

Mapa
Great Bend Map Poster & Print
Great Bend is named for its setting: the point where the Arkansas River, flowing east across Kansas, swings in a broad arc to the southeast. The town lies on the north side of that curve. On a map the river's meander contrasts sharply with the rigid grid of streets and the square-mile section roads that divide the surrounding farmland into even blocks.
The Santa Fe Trail once followed this stretch of the river, and the town grew up as a railroad and cattle town in the 1870s. Today it is the seat of Barton County, with the courthouse on a square at the centre of downtown. Just to the northeast lies Cheyenne Bottoms, one of the largest inland wetlands in the United States and a major stop for migrating birds.
A Great Bend map poster benefits from a wider frame that shows the river's curve, since that is the feature that names the town. Blueprint suits the surveyor's grid of the plains, and Paper gives it the look of an early county atlas. The contrast between straight lines and one long bend of water makes the image.

Courthouse square
Downtown is organised around the Barton County Courthouse, set on its own square with commercial blocks on all sides and the residential grid extending outward.
Section-line roads
Beyond the town, roads follow the one-mile survey grid of the plains, dividing the land into regular squares that give the wider map a precise, measured texture.
