Hashtrūd is the centre of a county in the south of East Azerbaijan Province, in north-western Iran, on high ground south-east of Tabriz. Its name means eight rivers in Persian, a reference to the streams that flow across the district. The area is largely rural, and the town serves as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding villages and farms.
On a map, Hashtrūd appears as a compact town on open land, with a main road running through it and a denser pattern of streets on either side. Toward the edges, the streets thin out into fields, and seasonal watercourses trace irregular lines across the plateau.
