Lanaken is in the province of Limburg, in Flanders, on the Belgian side of the border with the Netherlands. Maastricht lies just across the frontier. On the map, the town and its sub-villages form a loose chain of settlements, linked by roads that run towards the Dutch city and deeper into Belgium.
The Zuid-Willemsvaart canal runs through the municipality in a long, straight line and is the strongest single feature on the map. To the east, the Meuse and its floodplain form the national border. To the west, the landscape rises towards the heath and woods of the Hoge Kempen National Park. Pietersheim Castle, with its surrounding parkland, sits on the edge of that green area.
