Leichlingen lies in the Rhineland of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Solingen and Leverkusen. This is where the Wupper river leaves its narrow upland valley and approaches the Rhine plain. The town has grown along the river, and from above the Wupper is the clearest line on the map. It curves through the centre, with streets and houses lining both banks.
Leichlingen is known as the Blütenstadt, the town of blossoms, a name that comes from the many fruit orchards on the surrounding slopes. On the map, those hillsides appear as open, lightly marked ground between the built-up areas. They are broken by small side valleys, narrow roads, and scattered farms and hamlets on the higher ground.
The eastern part of town rises toward the Bergisches Land, with more woodland and steeper ground. The western side opens out toward the flatter land near the Rhine.
