Sundergarh is the headquarters of the district of the same name in northwestern Odisha, close to the borders with Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. The Ib River flows past the town, and on the map its curving channel and sandy banks form the main natural feature. The centre is a compact mix of markets, government buildings and residential lanes, with roads heading out towards Rourkela, Jharsuguda and the surrounding villages.
The district is well known in India as a centre for field hockey. Many players from its villages, often from the local Adivasi communities, have gone on to represent the national team.
