Alpharetta lies in north Fulton County, north of Atlanta. From above, the pattern is typical of the region's later suburbs: winding residential streets, cul-de-sacs and wooded lots, crossed by a few main roads. The strongest line is Georgia State Route 400, a highway running north to south through the city, with office campuses and commercial centres grouped along it.
The older downtown sits west of the highway around the crossing of Main Street and Milton Avenue. In recent years it has been rebuilt with a new city hall, a green and a tighter mesh of walkable blocks. Nearby, the Avalon development adds another dense, planned street pattern, in contrast with the looser layout of surrounding neighbourhoods.
