Anderlecht is one of the nineteen municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region and lies to the south-west of the city centre. Its map is shaped by transport. The Brussels–Charleroi Canal cuts diagonally through the eastern part, railway tracks and yards spread beside it, and the Cureghem district packs dense terraced streets and the old abattoir site into the space between.
Farther west, the pattern changes. The historic village centre gathers around the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter and Saint Guido, near the house where Erasmus stayed in 1521. Beyond it lie residential avenues, the green of Astrid Park, and the stadium of RSC Anderlecht, one of Belgium's most successful football clubs.
