Arad lies on the Mureș river in western Romania, near the Hungarian border. On a map, the river curves through the city from east to west. On one of its bends sits a large, six-pointed star fortress built by the Habsburgs in the eighteenth century, in the geometric style of that era. Its shape is one of the most distinctive urban features in the country.
The city centre developed on the opposite bank. Its main street, Bulevardul Revoluției, is wide and lined with nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings, including the large Administrative Palace. Arad is also remembered for 1849, when thirteen Hungarian generals from the revolutionary army were executed here, an event still commemorated in the city.
