Square-centred grid
The main square and mother church anchor a regular street grid, the typical layout of inland São Paulo towns, which gives the poster an ordered, evenly weighted centre.

Batatais Map Poster & Print
Batatais lies in the north of São Paulo state, a short drive from Ribeirão Preto, on the high farmland that stretches toward Minas Gerais. From above the town reads as a tidy checkerboard of square blocks, with a few longer avenues cutting through and the edges giving way quickly to rural roads. Beyond the last streets, the land is divided into large agricultural plots.
The centre follows the classic pattern of inland Brazilian towns: a main square with the mother church, and the grid extending outward from it at regular intervals. That church is the town's best-known address, because its interior holds a series of paintings by Candido Portinari. He was one of Brazil's most important twentieth-century artists and was born in nearby Brodowski.
On a Batatais map poster the grid is the main subject. In black and white, the repeated blocks become almost like a woven pattern, broken only by the curve of a highway, the thin line of a stream or a green patch where a park interrupts the pattern. It is a quiet, legible map, well suited to people who know every corner of the town.

Portinari's church
The main church, whose interior holds paintings by Candido Portinari, stands at the heart of the grid and is the natural focal point for a centred composition.
Farmland edge
Where the blocks end, long rural roads and field boundaries take over, giving the print a clean outer margin instead of continuous suburban sprawl.

Kwa nini Batatais
Ramani yenye maana
People hang Batatais for the house they grew up in, for years spent studying in the town, or for family roots in the farming country of northern São Paulo. The grid is simple enough that anyone who lived there can find their own street within seconds.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, so the print can show a family name or a date instead of the town name. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
