Berck lies on the Opal Coast of northern France, where a wide sandy beach runs almost dead straight along the Channel. From above the town has two parts: Berck-Ville, the older centre set back inland, and Berck-Plage, laid out along the seafront. To the south the Baie d'Authie opens as a broad estuary of sandbanks and channels that changes with every tide.
In the nineteenth century the sea air brought hospitals and treatment centres to Berck, beginning with a maritime hospital for children. Large medical buildings still stand out on the map close to the shore. The town is also known for its international kite festival held on the beach, and for the seals that rest on the sandbanks of the bay.
