Campos Gerais is in the south of Minas Gerais, one of Brazil's main coffee-growing regions. The landscape is made up of rolling hills, farms and the long, branching arms of the Furnas reservoir, which were created when a dam flooded the valleys of the Rio Grande. The municipality lies close to parts of this large artificial lake.
The town has a compact street network adapted to the terrain. Some streets follow the slopes, while others form short regular blocks around the centre. Beyond town, rural roads cross coffee and pasture land. In the wider area, the reservoir appears as large, irregular pale shapes with fingers of water reaching into the valleys.
