From above, Clemson is shaped by water and a university. The town sits in the Piedmont of South Carolina, where the land rolls toward the Blue Ridge, and Lake Hartwell pushes long, fingered inlets right up to its edges. The streets wrap around a large campus, and the residential blocks thin quickly into woodland and shoreline.
Clemson University dominates the plan. Its buildings, quads and athletic grounds form a dense cluster at the heart of the map, with the stadium's bowl easy to pick out. The campus stands on land that once belonged to the Fort Hill estate of John C. Calhoun, and the town took its name from Thomas Green Clemson, whose bequest founded the school.
