Concord fills a broad, flat valley in central Contra Costa County. Seen from above, it is a patchwork of suburban grids set at slightly different angles, each one reflecting when that neighbourhood was laid out. Freeways and the BART line cut across it on long diagonals, and the arterial roads form a coarse mesh of large blocks filled with curving residential streets.
Downtown centres on Todos Santos Plaza, a square park surrounded by an older, tighter street pattern than the rest of the city. To the southeast the land rises toward Mount Diablo, and the streets thin out into looping cul-de-sacs along the slopes.
