Elbistan lies in Kahramanmaraş Province, on a wide, high plain surrounded by the mountains of eastern Anatolia. The town's map is broad and flat, with a central core of older streets and newer apartment districts spreading outward across former fields. Roads radiate toward neighbouring towns and villages, and the open plain around the town gives the poster a calm, spacious background.
The Ceyhan River rises near Elbistan, fed by springs at the edge of the plain, before flowing south toward the Mediterranean. The surrounding basin is also known for its lignite deposits, which supply the large Afşin-Elbistan power plants between Afşin and Elbistan. On a map, mine sites and industrial ground appear as broad, irregular open areas in the countryside.
In February 2023, the second of two major earthquakes in southern Turkey struck close to Elbistan, and the town suffered heavy damage. Rebuilding has been reshaping its districts since then.
