Île d'Yeu lies in the Atlantic off the Vendée coast of France and is reached by ferry from Fromentine and other mainland ports. On a map it forms an elongated shape running from northwest to southeast. The northeastern shore is soft with sand and pine. The southwestern side is a rugged line of rocks and coves known as the Côte Sauvage.
The main town, Port-Joinville, sits around the harbour on the north coast, a network of short streets and whitewashed houses. Smaller villages such as Saint-Sauveur lie inland. A mesh of narrow lanes and cycle paths covers the island, and many visitors explore it by bike. The harbour has long been known for fishing, including tuna.
