Mendoza lies in western Argentina, on a dry plain at the foot of the Andes. The high peaks, including Aconcagua, rise further to the west. The city is laid out on a regular grid of blocks, broken by wide avenues and plazas. On a map the pattern is remarkably clear, with straight streets running in every direction until the land begins to rise toward the mountains.
An earthquake destroyed much of the city in 1861, and Mendoza was rebuilt a short distance from the old centre. The new plan had wide streets and open squares meant to offer safety in future earthquakes. Irrigation channels called acequias run alongside many streets.
To the west, Parque General San Martín covers a large area with a lake, paths and a hill, Cerro de la Gloria, topped by a monument to the Army of the Andes.
