Reno lies in the Truckee Meadows, a broad valley in western Nevada at the eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada. The Truckee River flows through downtown from west to east, and from above the city appears as a grid spreading across the valley floor, with newer subdivisions curling into the surrounding hills and bare desert slopes beyond them.
Reno grew from a railroad town into a centre of gaming and entertainment, and the arch over Virginia Street still calls it The Biggest Little City in the World.
