Rockland is a town in Plymouth County on the South Shore of Massachusetts. From above it looks like a classic New England town: a main road through a modest centre, with residential streets branching off in irregular loops and cul-de-sacs, and patches of woodland and water in between. There is no strict grid; the streets follow old routes and the lie of the land.
Like several South Shore towns, Rockland grew in the nineteenth century around shoemaking, and its older centre reflects that period of mill-town growth. Newer housing spreads outward in curving subdivisions, giving the map a pleasing mix of straight historic roads and softer modern lines.
