Salon-de-Provence lies between Aix-en-Provence and Arles, on the edge of the flat Crau plain. From above, the old town forms a rounded core of narrow streets, encircled by boulevards laid out along the lines of the former ramparts. At its centre, the Château de l'Empéri stands on a rocky outcrop, one of the largest castles in Provence.
The town is closely linked to Nostradamus, who lived here for the last part of his life and wrote much of his work in Salon; his house is now a museum. Salon is also home to the French Air Force Academy, whose base lies just outside the town. The moss-covered fountain in the centre is one of its well-known sights.
