Satpayev Map Poster & Print
Satpayev lies in the Ulytau Region of central Kazakhstan, in the steppe near the city of Zhezkazgan. It grew up in the Soviet era to serve the area's large copper mines and is named after Kanysh Satpayev, the geologist who studied the Zhezkazgan deposits and became the first president of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences. From above, the town's planned origins are immediately apparent.
Residential districts form regular blocks of apartment buildings, arranged in the microdistrict pattern typical of Soviet planning, with wide streets and open courtyards between them. Just beyond the town, the land changes character entirely: mine workings, spoil heaps, industrial sites and rail spurs cover large areas, their shapes stark and angular against the flat, almost featureless steppe.
A Satpayev map poster captures that striking contrast between a carefully ordered residential town and the raw scale of the mining landscape that supports it. For those who grew up here or worked in the mines, it is a precise record of a place built with a clear purpose, surrounded by the wide, open grassland of central Kazakhstan.

Mining landscape
Copper mine workings and industrial sites spread beyond the town, their large, angular shapes contrasting sharply with the orderly residential streets.
Open steppe
Flat grassland stretches in every direction around Satpayev, leaving the town as an isolated, sharply defined shape surrounded by vast blank space on the map.
