The narrow waist
Near the middle of the island, bays on opposite coasts nearly meet and divide Scyros into a northern and a southern half. From above it looks like two islands held together by a thin strip of land.

Scyros Map Poster & Print
Scyros, usually written Skyros today, is the largest island of the Sporades in the western Aegean. Its shape is unusual: two broad halves joined by a narrow waist where the two coasts almost meet. The northern half is lower and greener, with pine woods and farmland. The southern half rises into bare, rocky mountains with very few roads.
The main town, Chora, climbs the side of a steep rock on the east coast and is topped by a castle and a monastery. Its streets are a tight, irregular tangle of lanes. In myth, the young Achilles was hidden here at the court of King Lycomedes. The English poet Rupert Brooke is buried in an olive grove in the south of the island.
A Scyros map poster puts the island's double shape at the centre. The narrow waist near the port of Linaria is easy to read, and the eastern beaches below Chora form a long sweep. The roadless southern mountains leave broad blank space. The effect is sparse and balanced, with most of the detail in the north.

Chora on its rock
The town wraps around a steep outcrop above the east coast, with a fortified summit. Its dense lanes stand out against the open countryside around them and form the most detailed area of the poster.
The empty south
The mountainous southern half has few villages and only a handful of tracks. On the map it becomes a quiet expanse defined almost entirely by its indented coastline.

Kwa nini Scyros
Ramani yenye maana
Scyros suits someone who knows the island's two moods, the pines of the north and the stony south, or who has spent a summer in Chora. Its uneven, two-part outline makes an interesting shape on a plain wall.
Personalise the title, add a subtitle with a date and edit the coordinates line. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Then download the HD files for $9 or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
