Skopelos lies in the Northern Sporades, between Skiathos and Alonissos. It is long and slightly curved, running north-west to south-east. From above, most of the island is steep, forested land. The coastline is cut into small coves and pebble beaches, especially along the south-west side. The north-east coast is steeper and more exposed.
Skopelos Town sits on a wide bay on the north-east. Its houses are stacked up the slope in a tight pattern of lanes and steps, which shows up as a dense knot on the map. On the western side, Glossa sits on a hill above the port of Loutraki. A single main road connects them along the length of the island. Small monasteries and churches are scattered across the island. One of them, the chapel of Agios Ioannis on a rock above the sea, became internationally known through the film Mamma Mia. Skopelos is also known for its plums and for a style of cheese pie that is made all over the island.
