Shanto lies in the highlands of southern Ethiopia, in the Wolaita area not far from the town of Sodo. The surrounding land is hilly and intensively farmed. The town has grown along its main road, with side streets and footpaths spreading out from that spine into a patchwork of fields and homesteads.
The Wolaita highlands are among the most densely settled rural areas in the country.
