Sint-Truiden is a historic town in the province of Limburg and the centre of Haspengouw, the fruit-growing region of eastern Flanders. A ring road follows the line of the medieval ramparts around the old core, so on a map the centre is a clearly bounded oval. Streets converge on the Grote Markt, one of the largest market squares in Belgium.
The town grew around the abbey founded by Saint Trudo in the seventh century and still carries his name. Its town hall belfry and its béguinage both belong to UNESCO World Heritage listings, and church towers rise throughout the centre.
