Thívai, the modern town on the site of ancient Thebes, lies in Boeotia in Central Greece, northwest of Athens. The town centre stands on the Cadmea, the low plateau that served as the acropolis of the ancient city. From above, the built area is compact, surrounded by the flat, farmed plains of Boeotia.
Thebes is one of the most storied cities of the Greek world. It is the setting of the myths of Cadmus, Oedipus and the Seven against Thebes, and was a major power in the classical period. Remains of the ancient city appear within the modern town, and its archaeological museum holds finds from across the region.
