Toubakoura lies in the Koulikoro region of Mali, northeast of Bamako, in the belt of dry savanna between the wetter south and the Sahel. The landscape is flat to gently rolling, with cereal fields of the kind common across the region, scattered trees, and seasonal watercourses that fill during the rains and dry out for much of the year.
Like many towns in this part of Mali, its map is made of a few clear elements: a core of closely built compounds, lanes running between them, and roads and tracks radiating out to villages and fields.
