From above, Woodland is a town on level ground. The historic centre is laid out on a regular grid, and newer neighbourhoods extend it outward with curving streets. Two freeways frame the city, and beyond them the map is a patchwork of large rectangular fields, typical of the Sacramento Valley. The flatness gives the street pattern an unusual clarity.
Woodland is the county seat of Yolo County, California, northwest of Sacramento. The surrounding land is some of the most productive farmland in the state, and agriculture, especially tomatoes and other crops, has shaped the city's economy. Its downtown keeps a number of historic buildings, including the Woodland Opera House.
