Zhukovsky lies southeast of Moscow on the Moskva River. It grew around aviation research, and its layout shows it: residential districts and green courtyards in the centre, research campuses at the edges, and to the south a vast airfield whose runway stretches for several kilometres, dwarfing everything else on the map.
The town is named after Nikolai Zhukovsky, a pioneer of aerodynamics, and is home to TsAGI, the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, as well as the Gromov Flight Research Institute. The airfield has hosted the MAKS international air show, which for many years brought large crowds and new aircraft to the town.
