The Harar road
The main road east toward Harar runs through the town and forms its spine. Most streets branch off it, so from above the settlement reads as a line with short offshoots.

‘Alemaya Map Poster & Print
‘Alemaya, also known as Haramaya, sits high in the eastern highlands of Ethiopia's Oromia region, on the main road that links Dire Dawa with Harar. At this scale, the map is modest: a town strung along a main road, with side streets branching into the surrounding farmland, and hills rising on several sides. The layout follows the land more than any planned grid.
The town is best known for Haramaya University, founded as an agricultural college and formerly called Alemaya University. Its campus covers a large, clearly defined area next to the town, with a pattern of roads and buildings more regular than the lanes around it. The university has long been one of the country's main centres for agricultural research and teaching.
Nearby lies the basin of Lake Haramaya, which once held open water and has shrunk dramatically in recent decades. An ‘Alemaya map poster shows how the road, the town, the campus and that low basin fit together in the highland landscape, drawn as clean lines.

University campus
Haramaya University occupies a large site beside the town. Its internal roads and building blocks give the map a more orderly section that contrasts with the organic streets nearby.
Former lake basin
The low basin of Lake Haramaya, which has largely dried up, sits close to town. On the map it appears as flat, open ground set among the surrounding hills and fields.
