The BR-222 axis
The federal highway runs straight through town and serves as its main street. Almost every other road on the map begins from it.

Buriticupu Map Poster & Print
Buriticupu is a young town in western Maranhão. It grew quickly in the late twentieth century on the frontier between the savannas of the northeast and the forests of the Amazon basin. From above, its plan is simple and regular: blocks laid out on either side of the BR-222 highway, the road that brought settlers here.
The grid runs out from the highway into open, cleared land, and the town's outer edge is uneven where development has stopped. The most striking feature is on the ground itself: large erosion gullies, known locally as voçorocas, have opened on the edge of town and in some places cut into streets and houses.
A Buriticupu map poster records a town still being shaped. The straight road, the tidy blocks laid out beside it and the irregular, eaten-away edges tell the story of a settlement built fast on fragile soil. For people who helped build it, the map shows how much has changed in one generation.

Frontier grid
Blocks are laid out in a regular pattern typical of planned settlements in the region, which gives the centre a neat and orderly look from above.
Eroded edges
On the outskirts, deep gullies break the grid. Streets end abruptly where the land has given way, and the map shows that fragile margin.
