The Hida River
The river flows down the centre of the valley, with the town built along both banks, making it the natural axis of the composition.

Gero Map Poster & Print
Gero lies in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, where the Hida River runs through a steep, narrow valley. The town has had to fit itself into the available flat ground, so the map shows a long, slender band of streets following the river, with forested slopes rising sharply on both sides.
Gero Onsen is one of Japan's most celebrated hot spring resorts. In the seventeenth century the Confucian scholar Hayashi Razan named it among the three finest hot springs in the country, alongside Arima and Kusatsu. Ryokan and bathhouses line the banks, and the JR Takayama Line follows the valley through town.
A Gero map poster emphasises this linear form: the river as a central spine, bridges stitching the two banks together, and the dense streets of the onsen district thinning out as the valley narrows. The mountains appear as empty space, which gives the print a clear, vertical energy.

Onsen district
The densest streets gather around the hot spring area by the river, where inns and baths are packed onto the limited flat ground.
Valley rail line
The JR Takayama Line runs along the valley floor, a long, smooth curve that echoes the river and ties the town to Nagoya and Takayama.

Mapa ida ho signifikadu
Gero is a place people remember for a particular stay: a winter trip, a quiet weekend in the baths, a stop on the way to Takayama. A map of the valley makes a thoughtful souvenir that is far subtler than a photograph.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the dates of your stay, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download all six print sizes for $9 or order a matte printed poster.
