Hicksville Map Poster & Print
Hicksville is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, in the middle of Long Island. It grew around the railroad, and the station is still its centre: the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line and Port Jefferson Branch meet here, making it one of the busiest stops outside New York City. From above, commercial streets cluster around the tracks.
The hamlet takes its name from Valentine Hicks, a nineteenth-century Quaker merchant involved in the early railroad. After the Second World War, farmland gave way to the tract housing that also shaped neighbouring Levittown, and the map shows a dense, even carpet of residential blocks. Today the area is also known for the Indian shops and restaurants along Broadway.
A Hicksville map poster shows the rail lines as bold diagonals, the Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway crossing the north side, and the finely divided suburban grid in between. It is a strong image for commuters, families who have lived here for generations, and anyone who knows Long Island by its stations.

Postwar grid
Rows of mid-century housing fill most of the hamlet in small, regular blocks, producing the dense, even texture typical of Nassau County.
Broadway corridor
Broadway runs north to south through the centre, lined with shops and restaurants, and ties together the neighbourhoods on either side of the railroad.

For many people, Hicksville is where the train stopped on the way home. A map of the hamlet turns that everyday geography into a framed image, good for a first apartment in the city or a family house on Long Island.
