Ridge-following roads
The main routes curve with the lie of the land, following the tops of laterite rises. The result is soft, looping lines instead of straight axes.

Kōttayam Map Poster & Print
This Kōttayam lies in the north of Kerala, inland from the Malabar coast near Thalassery and Kannur. It is a different place from the better-known town of the same name in the south of the state. The landscape here is made of low laterite hills and wooded valleys, and roads follow ridges and streams rather than any planned grid.
The name has a long history in Malabar. It is connected with the Kottayam royal house, which is remembered through Pazhassi Raja and through the Kathakali plays attributed to a Kottayam prince. On a map, though, the place today looks like a spread-out Kerala settlement: houses along the roads, and plantation and paddy between the clusters.
A Kōttayam map poster turns this loose pattern into a fine web of lines. Roads curve along the contours, lanes branch off into the greenery, and small streams cut through the valleys. The overall effect is organic and even, which makes it a quiet, detailed print for anyone with roots in northern Kerala.

Dispersed settlement
Houses and small centres spread out along the roads, which is typical of Kerala, instead of forming one dense core. The print gets an even, textile-like texture across the whole frame.
Valley streams
Narrow watercourses run through the lower ground between the hills. They add thin, irregular lines that link the road network to the wider Malabar landscape.

Many families from northern Kerala live far from home, and this is a way to keep the shape of it in view. It suits a family house, a gift for parents, or a reminder of a place whose name has meaning in Malabar's history.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be changed, for example to add the family house name or a year. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The file comes ready to print at 300 DPI.
