Hola Map Poster

Hola is the administrative headquarters of Tana River County in eastern Kenya. It sits beside the Tana, the country's longest river, which winds towards the Indian Ocean through otherwise dry lowland. On a map the town is small and practical: a central cluster of streets around government offices and markets, main roads heading out of town and the river curving close by.

Water shapes everything here. The Hola irrigation scheme, established in the colonial period and revived in later decades, turned land beside the river into regular farm plots. On the map those fields appear as a geometric patchwork against the looser lines of the surrounding scrub. The river itself, with its meanders and old channels, provides the most expressive line on the sheet.

The name also carries a difficult history. In 1959 a detention camp here was the site of the Hola massacre, in which eleven detainees were killed, an event that helped hasten the end of colonial rule in Kenya. A Hola map poster does not tell that story directly. It records the place with care, setting out river, fields and town in calm black and white.
