Accra runs along the Atlantic coast of Ghana, facing the Gulf of Guinea, and the shoreline sets the base line for everything on the map. The oldest districts, Jamestown and Ussher Town, sit right on the water with a dense pattern of narrow streets. From there the city spreads north and east in wider blocks, following roads that fan out into the suburbs.
The Ring Road loops around central Accra, and Korle Lagoon opens to the sea on the west side of the old town, fed by the Odaw River. Independence Square, with its Black Star Gate, sits near the shore, and not far away is the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, honouring the leader who took Ghana to independence in 1957.
