Ashaiman lies immediately north of Tema in Greater Accra, and on a map the two appear almost joined, separated mainly by major roads and the edge of Tema's planned layout. Ashaiman itself has a very different texture: a tightly packed mesh of short streets and lanes, with few open spaces and buildings filling nearly every block.
The town grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century as workers came to the harbour and factories of Tema, which was developed as a planned port city from the 1950s onward. Ashaiman offered housing close to those jobs, and it grew largely without a master plan. Today it is a municipality in its own right, with large markets and a young population.
