Acharnés is the large municipality on the northern side of the Athens basin. On the map, the dense street mesh of the capital's suburbs runs up against rising ground here. To the north and west, the slopes of Mount Parnitha close off the view. Between them lie irregular neighbourhoods, industrial plots and the long line of the Attiki Odos motorway.
The place has a long past. Ancient Acharnae was the largest deme of Attica, and Aristophanes named a comedy, The Acharnians, after its charcoal burners. In recent memory, the municipality hosted the Olympic Village for the 2004 Athens Games, a planned district that stands out on the map with its regular layout.
