Plaka lies on the slopes directly beneath the Acropolis and is among the oldest continuously inhabited areas of Athens. The map shows a web of short, bending streets rather than a clear grid, many following routes older than the modern city. Adrianou Street curves along its northern side, and the quarter gradually gives way to the busier streets around Monastiraki and Syntagma.
High on the slope, just under the cliffs of the Acropolis, is Anafiotika, a cluster of small whitewashed houses built in the nineteenth century by workers from the island of Anafi. Its paths are too narrow for cars and turn into steps. Lower down, ancient monuments such as the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates and the Roman Agora stand among the houses.
A Plaka map poster is shaped by the hill beneath it. The streets follow the contours, curve around the rock and stop where the slope rises too sharply, leaving the Acropolis as an open space above. The pattern looks organic, almost handmade, and in the Paper style the lines resemble an archaeological drawing.
