Piraeus is a peninsula of harbours. The great main port of Kantharos opens to the west, lined with ferry quays and piers. On the eastern side the smaller, rounded basins of Zea and Mikrolimano cut into the rocky coast. Between them, the city's streets run in straight lines across the promontory before climbing the slopes of Kastella hill.
The regular pattern has deep roots. In the fifth century BC the planner Hippodamus of Miletus laid out Piraeus on a grid, and the Long Walls tied it to Athens, a few kilometres inland. Today it is one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, with ferries leaving for the Aegean islands and container terminals stretching along the shore to the west.
A Piraeus map poster shows why the city has always faced outward. Water surrounds it on three sides, the harbour moles and quays read as sharp geometric lines, and the street grid fills the land between them. From above, the peninsula looks like a hand reaching into the Saronic Gulf, which is more or less what it has been for millennia.

Two small, nearly circular harbours on the eastern side, both in use since antiquity, cut distinctive rounded bites into the coastline.

The straight streets across the peninsula follow a plan first drawn in the fifth century BC, one of the earliest planned grids in Europe.
