Hydra is a narrow, rocky island lying off the eastern Peloponnese, long and thin, with a dry mountain ridge along its length. Almost all of its life is concentrated in one place: the harbour town on the north coast, where stone mansions and houses rise steeply around a horseshoe-shaped port like the seats of a theatre.
Private cars and motorbikes are not allowed on the island, so there is no road network in the usual sense. Donkeys, mules and water taxis handle transport, and the map shows footpaths and stepped lanes rather than roads. A coastal path leads west to the small settlements of Kamini and Vlychos, while most of the interior is open hillside with a few monasteries.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Hydra's shipowners grew wealthy, and their fleet played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence. Later the island drew artists and writers, among them Leonard Cohen, who bought a house there in 1960. A Hydra map poster renders the harbour's dense web of lanes against a long, almost empty island.
