Adra lies on the coast of Almería province, where the Sierra de Gádor and the Alpujarras foothills come down close to the Mediterranean. The map shows a compact old town on rising ground, a fishing harbour with breakwaters, and a long straight coastline. The delta of the Río Adra spreads to the east.
It is one of the oldest settlements in Spain. Phoenicians founded it as Abdera, and the town was later Roman and then Moorish. It is also said to be the last place on the Iberian mainland where the Nasrid sultan Boabdil stayed before leaving for North Africa. Today the plain around it is covered with the plastic greenhouses that define this stretch of the Almería coast.
