Akanda lies just north of Libreville, on the peninsula between the Gabon Estuary and the Atlantic. It has grown quickly as the capital has spread outward, and much of its street network is recent. From above, new residential quarters reach toward a coastline that breaks up into creeks, inlets and mangrove channels.
An Akanda map poster captures a place still being filled in. Main roads carry traffic between the commune and central Libreville, while side streets branch into newer neighbourhoods at varied angles. Toward the water the built area stops and the coast turns into an intricate edge of mudflats and mangrove, where the land and the sea are hard to separate.
The commune shares its name with Akanda National Park, a protected area of mangroves and tidal flats on the nearby Mondah Bay coast known for its migratory birds.
