Aki sits on the eastern coast of Kochi Prefecture, facing Tosa Bay and the open Pacific. From above, the town is a narrow band of streets between the sea and the mountains of Shikoku. A river runs down from the hills and crosses the plain before reaching the coast, and the town has grown along both of its banks.
The shoreline is the clearest line on the map: long and gently curved, with the coastal road and railway running beside it. Inland, the grid breaks up quickly into farm plots and valley roads that follow the terrain. Aki is known as the birthplace of Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of Mitsubishi, and it keeps an old quarter of samurai-era residences.
