Aliağa is on the Aegean coast of Turkey, in İzmir Province, about an hour north of the city of İzmir. The coastline here is broken into small bays and headlands, and on a map it is one of the most striking features: a series of jetties, piers and harbour basins pushing out into the sea from an otherwise curved shore.
Many of those structures are industrial. Aliağa has one of Turkey's main oil refineries, a large petrochemical complex, several commercial ports and a well-known ship-recycling zone, where ocean vessels are dismantled on the shore. These facilities occupy large tracts of coast north and south of the town and show up as big geometric blocks beside the residential streets.
The same coast has much older layers. The ancient Aeolian cities of Kyme and Myrina lie nearby, and their harbours once traded across the Aegean.
