Along, now officially called Aalo, is the headquarters of West Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh. It sits in a valley in the eastern Himalayan foothills, at the confluence of the Siyom and Yomgo rivers. On the map, the rivers shape everything: the town gathers on the flatter land beside the water, and streets climb up the slopes where the terrain allows.
The layout does not follow a grid. Roads curve along riverbanks and contour lines, and bridges connect the different parts of town across the water. Beyond the built-up area, forested hills rise steeply on every side, so the settlement looks like a small patch of streets held in a fold of the mountains.
