Lhasa sits at around 3,650 metres in the valley of the Kyi Chu, a tributary of the Yarlung Tsangpo. From above, the city is long and narrow, running east to west along the river, with steep mountain slopes on both sides limiting how far the streets can spread north or south.
The Potala Palace stands on Marpo Ri, the Red Hill, just west of the old centre, and it remains the most recognisable point on the map. To the east lies the Jokhang Temple, surrounded by the Barkhor, the ring of streets that pilgrims walk clockwise. The wider Lingkhor circuit once enclosed the whole old city.
