Amager is the island that carries much of Copenhagen's southeast. It is almost completely flat, and from above it is a patchwork of very different parts. Dense historic streets sit at its northern tip beside the harbour, planned residential grids fill the middle, the runways of Copenhagen Airport line the east coast, and a wide open landscape of reclaimed land stretches along the west.
The northern end includes Christianshavn, laid out in the seventeenth century with canals in the Dutch manner, and the former naval area of Holmen. To the south, the long straight lines of Ørestad follow the metro, while Kalvebod Fælled, a large nature area on reclaimed seabed, stays almost empty. Along the east shore, Amager Strandpark is an artificial beach and lagoon opened in the mid-2000s. In the old fishing town of Dragør, in the south, yellow-washed houses line cobbled lanes. Kalvebod Fælled
A large, flat common on land reclaimed from the sea in the twentieth century and once used for military training. Its paths across open ground leave a spare, almost blank area on the map.
Airport and Øresund link
Copenhagen Airport fills much of the east coast, and just past it the road and rail link to Sweden leaves Amager through a tunnel. The runways add long, straight lines to the composition.
