Nørrebro begins where Dronning Louises Bro crosses the Lakes, the chain of reservoirs that separates Copenhagen's historic center from its nineteenth-century outer quarters. From that bridge, Nørrebrogade runs northwest as a single strong axis. The neighborhood spreads out on both sides in tight blocks of apartment buildings, many built quickly for workers as the city grew beyond its old fortifications.
Two green shapes stand out on the map. Assistens Kirkegård, a large walled cemetery that doubles as a park, holds the graves of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. Farther north, Superkilen stretches as a long, narrow urban park designed around objects gathered from dozens of countries. It reflects the mix of people who live in the district today.
