Amstetten lies in the Mostviertel, the western part of Lower Austria, on the River Ybbs. The town grew on the broad valley floor, with its centre close to the river, streets spreading out across the flatter ground and newer districts climbing onto the rolling hills around it. The Ybbs curves through the town, giving the map a natural axis.
Amstetten is an important junction on the Westbahn, the main railway between Vienna and Salzburg, and lines heading south branch off here as well. The surrounding Mostviertel is known for its pear orchards and for Most, the traditional pear and apple cider that gives the region its name.
