Anzio occupies a low headland on the Tyrrhenian coast south of Rome. From above, the sea defines its shape. A curved harbour is tucked against the point, and a compact old town sits behind it. A long strip of development follows the shoreline in both directions until it merges with Nettuno to the southeast.
The town stands on the site of ancient Antium, a retreat for Roman aristocrats and the birthplace of both Nero and Caligula. Remains of an imperial villa still line the shore. In January 1944 Allied forces landed here in Operation Shingle, and the months of fighting that followed made the name Anzio known around the world.
An Anzio map poster works well because the coastline gives it a strong, readable outline. Breakwaters and quays form sharp geometric marks at the harbour, and the old street pattern is tighter than the later districts inland.
